A recent trip to Bainbridge brought many surprises, not least the Pegasus Coffee House. I've been there before on their acoustic music night when a good friend from England came over to play there. It was a wonderful evening and one Pete still talks about, but either their food was not established then, or we totally failed to notice anything, other than the usual coffee house fare.
When my wife and son suggested we go there on a recent trip with the boat, I was only expecting a cup of coffee and a sticky bun, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a chalk board with tantalizing "specials". Herbed goat's cheese and cold smoked salmon toasts topped with shaved fennel seemed an obvious choice, together with a salad of local greens, toasted hazelnuts, pecorino and apple slices. I ordered a delicious Belgian beer and Carolyn ordered a citrus iced tea and we sat back in a cool corner by the window and waited for our food to arrive. It was absolutely delicious. One serving of the salmon was enough for the three of us. While we were lunch munching, there was lots of tooing and froing from the kitchen, and we couldn't help notice a LOT more food going out than what was on the specials board.
It turns out that their menu is a cornucopia of local produce, and exciting in it's varied combinations, so we vowed to come back again for dinner. Later that evening, we ordered a Pork Terrine with pistachios and their Provencal Mussels with sea salt and rosemary frites. All washed down with 2 more Belgian beers. Alex had slipped into the restaurant and had persuaded our sever to bring him a slice of dark chocolate cake with raspberries, the last slice he proudly told me, so we treated ourselves to a glass of Prossecco so we wouldn't feel left out.
Wonderful food, carefully prepared and presented, with friendly and efficient service, and all of this for less than $50.
5 stars
